What are Protective styles?
Protective styles, in essence, are those that need little to no daily manipulation. The less you handle and touch your hair, the less likely you are to experience breakage, which is why they are regarded as "protective." Tucking away your ends, which are the oldest and most vulnerable sections of your hair, dramatically reduces split ends and potential breaking.
Easing The Tension
The advantages of a protective style begin with the installation. When braiding your own hair or having braids installed by a professional, make sure your hair is not overly tight. If your stylist is using too much tension, especially around your delicate edges, don't be afraid to speak up.
Also, when styling your braids and twists, try not to pull on the hair too much. What good is a protective style if it causes you to lose your edges?
Cleansing Your Scalp
There are several methods for cleaning your hair while wearing a protective style, but here's one: dilute your shampoo with a little water in a spray bottle, directly apply it to the scalp, gently massage, and rinse with warm water.
Keep Hair & Scalp Moisturized
Because you don't have to fuss with your hair as much in the morning, protective styles help you spend less time getting ready. However, if you want your protective style to be effective, you must frequently hydrate your hair and scalp.
Wrap Hair Before Bed
Wrapping your hair in a satin or silk scarf or bonnet will help prevent unnecessary moisture loss unless you sleep on a satin pillowcase. However, avoid using cotton, which will absorb moisture from your hair.
Be Patient & Gentle When Taking Down Hair
You may be eager to take down your style so you rush through the process. Please, refrain from doing so & causing breakage. Pre-condition your hair to get it ready for the take down process. Start by gently detangling your hair with your fingers from end to root. Next, follow up with a detangling brush or wide-tooth comb to remove any remaining loose hair if needed.
